Day 1: Relaxation & Adventure in Clarke County, VA

Virginia State Arboretum

Start the day with a walk and picnic on the sprawling grounds of the Virginia State Arboretum. The property has America’s largest boxwood gardens and is known for its beautiful Cedar of Lebanon trees. There is plenty to enjoy during every season.

If you aren’t able to pack a picnic lunch, not to worry. There is a perfect takeout place on the way – the Lone Oak Tavern (a 5 mins drive away) – offers a large range of delectable finger food, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, and even pasta to choose from!

Then setup amidst the arboretum’s large collection of trees – from towering Virginia State Champion trees to a Pinterest-worthy gingko tree grove – eat, drink, and enjoy the day!

If your getaway includes more than two, don’t worry the arboretum has plenty for the kids and is pet friendly. Don’t forget to bundle up!

Take a Drive to Berryville

After relaxing for the morning at the arboretum, or driving down the backroads of Clarke County, head on to the quaint Berryville (still in Clarke County), a 15-minute drive north for a change of pace.

Spend the afternoon exploring Berryville’s historic charms dating back to the 1800s. You’ll want to make sure to check out local shops like Berryville Treasures, an artisan boutique filled with handmade goods from local artists and craftsmen.

For the wine-lovers, make sure you set aside sufficient time in your schedule for a short detour to Twin Oaks Tavern Winery, an award-winning boutique hillside vineyard located a short drive away from the town center. Sip wine while enjoying the scenic views of the Valley.
